A Bittersweet Farewell: Our Last Day in Bogor and Visit to the Botanical Garden

Before leaving Bogor, Indonesia, we made sure not to miss one of the city’s most iconic destinations—the Bogor Botanical Garden (Kebun Raya Bogor). Miss Anis and her friends graciously brought us to this beautiful and magical garden for one last unforgettable experience.

Exploring the Botanical Beauty of Bogor

Located in the heart of Bogor City, West Java, the Bogor Botanical Garden is one of the oldest and most renowned botanical gardens in Southeast Asia, established in 1817 during the Dutch colonial period. Spanning around 87 hectares, it is home to more than 15,000 species of tropical plants, trees, flowers, and palms from across Indonesia and beyond.

The garden offered a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere, with its wide tree-lined paths, serene ponds, and shaded lawns ideal for walks and quiet conversations. We saw some of the highlights including the giant lily pond, the Amorphophallus titanum (commonly known as the corpse flower), orchid and fern gardens, cactus houses, and even a medicinal plant section. There are also historic sites inside such as the Dutch cemetery, a zoology museum, and a view of the Presidential Palace (Istana Bogor).

Though we didn’t get the chance to explore the entire garden—since it was hot, we were already tired, and it was nearing lunchtime—we were grateful for the time we had. Soon, we headed back to prepare our things, take some rest, and get ready for our scheduled departure to the airport by 5:00 PM.

Saying Goodbye: Bittersweet but Beautiful

Going home was filled with excitement—I couldn’t wait to see my family again, breathe in the air of my hometown, and eat my favorite food. But at the same time, my heart felt heavy knowing I was leaving behind the friends I had grown close to over nearly a month. I didn’t know when we would meet again, but I knew the memories we created would stay with me forever.

We traveled to the airport accompanied by our friends from IPB University. It was a special moment—singing in the car, laughing together, and cherishing our final ride. The night before, we even had one last dinner together, enjoying our favorite Indonesian dishes and singing until midnight.

At the airport, they kindly helped us with our luggage and stayed with us until our flight. We had dinner while waiting to our fellow exchange students from Guimaras State University, who had been staying at Pakuan University. When it was finally time to say goodbye, we hugged each other tightly, knowing that our shared journey had brought us together like childhood friends. Before parting ways, we took one last group photo—a “groufie” we will all treasure.

Grateful Hearts and Lasting Memories

Our last day in Bogor was filled with mixed emotions—gratitude, joy, and a touch of sadness. Visiting the Bogor Botanical Garden gave us a deeper appreciation for Indonesia’s natural beauty and rich culture. The friendships we formed, the laughter we shared, and the experiences we lived will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Though we may have left Indonesia, the memories remain—and we carry them with us wherever we go.
