Day One Diaries: Firsts That Last

On April 16, 2025, as of our academic journey, students and lecturers from Guimaras State University - Baterna Campus, Philippines were given a wonderful opportunity to visit IPB University in Bogor, Indonesia. This experience became more than just an academic presentation—it was a beautiful blend of culture, learning, and connection.

Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the faculty and students of IPB University. Their hospitality was truly felt by all of us. The event began with a research presentation delivered by two of our lecturers, who shared their studies and areas of expertise. The participants from IPB University actively engaged by asking insightful questions, driven by curiosity and a strong desire to explore innovative ideas. Our lecturers addressed each question professionally, providing clear and thoughtful answers.

As the presentations wrapped up, four of us students prepared to showcase a piece of Philippine culture. Before our performance, IPB University impressed us with their cultural dance called Jaipong, a traditional Indonesian dance known for its lively rhythm and graceful movements. In return, we performed the Cariñosa, an iconic Filipino folk dance that portrays courtship and love in our culture.

Following the performances, we proceeded to our individual research presentations. Each of us presented our study and engaged with the participants, answering their questions and explaining the relevance of our work, especially in relation to our field of agriculture. The exchange of ideas was meaningful, and it felt rewarding to see how our research sparked interest among the audience. The certification is given after the presentation.

After the presentations, we had the chance to take photos with the teachers and students of IPB University, deepening the bond formed during the event. Our student buddies then toured us around the Sekolah Vokasi campus. I was truly amazed by the size of the campus and the modern facilities available. They even have cattle, sheep, and goats, which made me think—if I studied here, I would have so many opportunities to learn and experiment hands-on with agricultural practices.

One of the highlights of the tour was visiting their newly opened coffee factory. We participated in a sensory evaluation of coffee, watched how they roast and process it for market, and learned a lot about the journey of coffee from bean to brew. It was an eye-opening experience, especially for someone interested in the agricultural side of food production. Lastly we visited their micropropagation laboratories where in they cultured different crops like garlic, potatoes etc.

This international academic and cultural exchange was more than just a formal program—it was a memorable experience filled with learning, friendship, and personal growth. I even made a special friend from IPB University who asked about my research and how she could apply it to her own studies. Moments like that reminded me of the true value of sharing knowledge across borders.

This journey to IPB University will forever hold a special place in my academic and personal life. It proved that learning goes beyond the classroom—and that through collaboration, we can grow not just as students, but as global citizens.
